Andrea Bruns' artistic journey began in the suburban landscape of East Berlin, Germany, where she was born. Her childhood in this setting provided a unique backdrop to her nascent creativity. It wasn't until middle school, at the tender age of 13, that Andrea discovered her passion for art. A photo course ignited a fascination within her—the alchemy of developing film and creating prints was a revelation.
Without any artistic connections in her family, Andrea's journey into the arts was a self-motivated pursuit. Her formative training consisted of that pivotal film photography course in middle school, and from there, she became self-taught. This foundation set the stage for her lifelong love affair with the lens.
In 1980, Andrea made the bold decision to escape from East Germany, a move that took her away from her budding passion temporarily as she navigated a new life, starting in construction to make ends meet. However, her passion for photography never dimmed, remaining a beloved hobby.
Relocating to Canada in 1993 marked a significant turning point. The stunning landscapes and encouraging words from those around her fueled a resurgence in her artistic pursuits. Nature’s beauty, landscapes, and seascapes became her primary inspirations. As she honed her craft, Andrea began to build her reputation through dedicated work, competitions, and exhibitions.
Andrea finds profound beauty in everyday surroundings, from the tumultuous seas to the stately mountains, and even the urban landscapes filled with unseen stories. Her connection with her subjects is a testimony to her ability to see contrast and harmony. This unique perspective breathes life into her photography, making the viewer feel as if they are present in the scene.
Beyond her photography, Andrea enjoys travelling and spending time with her family, pursuits that undoubtedly feed into her creative vision. Her other professional engagement in interior design complements her artistic endeavours, allowing her to extend her aesthetic sensibilities into different realms.
